Unfortunate Circumstance
Thunder rumbled, and Cass was ruminating thoughts she fought to avoid her whole life. Having done everything possible in order to never face her self-doubt and self-loathing, she's now overcome with numbness. Her only salvation is a man who sure as hell doesn't have his shit together either. Much worse than her, actually, and yet she desperately clings to him like a life-boat. She looks like a wet cat.
Cass likes Wade more than she'd ever like to admit. At first she thought he was foul, like her father. An unwieldy man with too many screws loose, she'd dealt with enough of that, and rather die than wait around for love and validation. But more and more, fascination verged upon her. Suddenly she's pretty happy, rosy and offbeat.
She likes the way he glowers, retreating into esoteric solitude, but then suddenly sweet and coy on a dime. So much of her time is spent trying to understand, and only recently realizing, people do weird things because they want to spend the rest of their life with someone.
"Why would you want to be around someone, I don't like people. People are cruel and nasty." She thinks, her expression unconsciously turns into a pout, brow furrowed.
This opinion fluctuates at the thought of that particularly nasty individual, suddenly pleasant, endearing, and familiar. She does a double-take, catching herself smiling, worried, frowning now.
"Surely I can fake it till I make it." But he's attentive, doting, like he really cares about her future. This makes her assail a rock with her foot, scoring a home run, sending it into the stratosphere.
Cass has always been different. Not in a way she can verbalize, or really grasp. Only so many people want to be around someone like her, who doesn't say much, and gets too excited about weird things. Other girls scream when they see bugs. Cass doesn't like those loud unpleasant people, who ask questions expecting certain answers, she drifts in and out of conversations. People think she's comfortless and harsh, that feels unfair.
Nobody really knows her, except him.
Her tail dances awkwardly, and she's caught off-guard when he seems genuinely interested in what she has to say. At least, he doesn't seem offended, or mad. He stays for a pretty long time, giving...what she thinks is sage advice. She's kind of scared this is all some sort of prank, she asks him if he's doing this just to be cruel. He grows quiet, with a worried expression. He changes the subject, asking about her favorite movie, suddenly she's beaming.
"Life is bleak and ugly, so I may as well indulge a little." Was what led her to cling to him tighter, throwing herself into the abyss. Cass finds herself cuddling up to him, while he seems distracted and unamused, tapping his fingers rhythmically. Things turned out differently than she imagined. They probably seem like a pretty bizarre couple, but she's comfortable here with him, listening to the rain tapping the glass.
